Are Products For Hair Loss Really Worth The Money?

Article by R.D. Hawkins

At some point most people with start to experience either balding or thinning and start to look for products for hair loss. They may start with a shampoo of product for hair loss sold at their local supercenter or hair salon guaranteed to make a person’s hair look fuller and thicker.

But chances are the balding and thinning will continue, and so will their search, trying many different products for hair loss with generally mixed results. This was certainly my story, and I have a feeling it is yours as well.

Most products for hair loss cost somewhere between 20 and 50 dollars a month and require ongoing use to sustain any gains that might have been made. So let’s say that the average persons average cost is 35 dollars a month. That amounts to 420 dollars a year for products for hair loss in addition to what an individual may already be spending on shampoos, conditioners, scalp coloring sprays, and other similar products.

But what we are focusing on is whether the 420 plus dollars spent on products for hair loss are worth the time and money. In other words does the cost outweigh the benefits?

What is the likely cause?

There is an above average chance that an inherited hormone driven condition known as androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) is the underlying cause. The reason this matters is that loss of hair caused by androgenic alopecia results in permanent balding in men and extreme thinning (and possibly balding) in women. Once the damage is done there is little that can be done to reverse the damage short of hair transplant surgery.

So the question really gets down to whether it is worth 420 dollars a year to slow and possibly reverse its progression. The answer for me is yes but for someone else it could be no. It is a subjective question with no right or wrong answer.

Do products for hair loss really work?

The cold hard truth is that no one product is 100 percent effective all of the time. It is safe to say that if a person knew, without a doubt, spending 35 dollars a month would reverse their balding or thinning they would almost certainly spend the money. After all, maintaining a full head of hair makes us feel and look younger and also plays a role in how others view us, both personally and professionally.

What types of products for hair loss have I found success with?

I have been using these types of products now for over ten years with some successes and some failures. Perhaps more importantly when I don’t use some type of hair re-growth/hair loss product my balding seems to accelerate.

In my opinion 5% minoxidil products work pretty well when applied topically twice a day, but will not reverse a receding hair line. A three months supply will run around 50 dollars.

Herbal products are also another good choice with my favorite being those products for hair loss that are taken orally in liquid form. There are also topical herbal formulas available for those who have failed to have success with 5% minoxidil products such as Rogaine. The drawback is that they are more expensive costing around 35 dollars per month on average.

In conclusion, when asking are products for hair loss worth the money the answer is probably yes, but the whole matter should be approached with a great deal of skepticism. If you try a product and don’t see results in a few months it is time to move on to something else. In the end doing noting isn’t the answer unless you have resigned yourself to the fact that balding is inevitable and having a healthy head of hair really isn’t that important to you both personally or professionally.
